Dishwasher efficiency: Eco-modes and full loads save more energy

Research into dishwasher efficiency indicates that using the eco-mode setting is generally more cost-effective than standard programs. While eco-programs take longer—sometimes exceeding three hours—they consume less energy and water by heating water at lower temperatures and allowing more time for detergents to work.

A 2025 study by the Belgian consumer organization Testachats, which examined 73 dishwashers, estimated that using eco-mode could save an average of 45 euros per year compared to standard programs, based on an electricity price of 30 cents per kWh. In the most efficient models tested, savings reached approximately 50 euros annually.

Regarding load size, testing shows that running two half-loads is less efficient than running a single full load. Although a half-load program uses approximately 10% less electricity and only about 2.3 liters less water, the cumulative consumption of multiple half-loads exceeds that of one full cycle. Additionally, half-loads may result in poorer drying performance and less effective cleaning for heavily soiled items like pots and pans.
