Dishwasher efficiency: Why pre-rinsing dishes is unnecessary
Experts advise against rinsing dishes by hand before placing them in a dishwasher, noting that only scraping off large food scraps is necessary. According to the ENERGY STAR program from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, pre-rinsing causes significant water waste when combined with the machine's automatic cycle.
Modern dishwashers and specialized detergents are designed to handle grease and food residue effectively. Brands such as Bosch recommend simply removing solid debris like rice or bones to prevent filter clogs, while leaving sauces and oils for the machine to clean. Furthermore, Whirlpool notes that over-rinsing can interfere with smart sensors; if the sensor detects a load that is too clean, it may incorrectly shorten the cleaning cycle, potentially resulting in less effective sanitation.
