Dishwasher maintenance and usage tips to prevent mineral buildup

Common issues with dishwashers, such as white mineral deposits on glassware and dried food residue on plates, are often caused by hard water and incorrect usage habits rather than machine failure.

To combat white streaks caused by hard water, using distilled white vinegar in the rinse aid compartment can help dissolve mineral deposits due to its acidic properties. However, users should consult manufacturer guidelines first, as regular acid exposure may damage rubber components.

Additionally, pre-rinsing dishes under a tap is a frequent mistake. Modern detergents rely on enzymes that require food particles to function effectively. Pre-rinsing can cause sensors to detect a cleaner load, leading the machine to shorten the cycle and leave grease or starch behind. Instead, users are advised to scrape food scraps into the bin. Proper loading is also essential; dishes should be placed so that spray arms can reach all surfaces, with plates in the bottom rack and glasses in the top rack.
