Disinformation in Brazil identified as multi-ideological issue

Commentators are examining the multi-ideological nature of electoral disinformation in Brazil, arguing that fake news is not exclusive to any single political faction.

Historical examples are cited to demonstrate how different sides have utilized misinformation. On one side, the 2018 elections were marked by claims regarding the ‘kit gay’ and ‘mamadeira de piroca’. On the other, past campaigns involving the Workers' Party (PT) included allegations against Geraldo Alckmin regarding the privatization of state banks and rumors concerning the Bolsa Família program.

Other notable instances include the 1989 accusations against Lula regarding his personal life and the 2010 ‘paper ball’ incident involving José Serra, which was characterized as an exaggerated or false account of a physical confrontation during a campaign walk.
