Disney admits box‑office shortfall for The Mandalorian & Grogu and Moana live‑action remakes

Disney confirmed that its recent live‑action releases, *The Mandalorian & Grogu* and the *Moana* remake (titled *Oceania*), fell short of box‑office expectations. The Star Wars film earned $81 million domestically and about $345 million worldwide, well below the $1 billion plus previously generated by the franchise, and its $165 million production budget (excluding marketing) suggests it may not be profitable. The *Moana* remake grossed roughly $262 million against an estimated $250 million budget, leaving the studio with a likely loss exceeding $100 million after promotional costs. CEO Josh D’Amaro told investors that, despite the weak theatrical performance, the franchises continue to drive revenue through merchandising, theme‑park attractions, video‑games and streaming platforms, and therefore are not considered total failures. He added that the *Moana* title is expected to find a longer lifespan on Disney+, reinforcing the broader ecosystem value of Disney’s intellectual property.
