FCC Orders Unprecedented Early License Review of Disney's ABC Stations

The Federal Communications Commission, led by Chairman Brendan Carr, has ordered an accelerated license‑renewal proceeding for eight Disney‑owned ABC television stations – KABC‑TV Los Angeles, KFSN‑TV Fresno, KGO‑TV San Francisco, WLS‑TV Chicago, WABC‑TV New York, WTVD Durham NC, WPVI‑TV Philadelphia and KTRK‑TV Houston. The action is the first early‑renewal review in more than 50 years and is tied to an investigation of Disney’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies, which the FCC says may violate anti‑discrimination rules.

ABC and Disney contend the proceeding is retaliation for critical news coverage, especially after President Donald Trump urged the network to fire Jimmy Kimmel. The filing cites more than 150,000 public comments, over 95 % of which support the stations, and notes that the comment deadline is August 5. Former FCC officials, a bipartisan coalition of former commissioners, and dozens of advocacy groups have condemned the move as intimidation and a violation of the First Amendment.
