Disney cancels plans for new Muppets series despite Emmy wins

Disney has reportedly abandoned plans to develop a full television series following the success of ‘The Muppet Show’ variety special. Despite the special being a major ratings hit—reaching nearly 8 million viewers across ABC and Disney+ within eight days—and winning four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Special, a series order has not materialized.

Sources indicate that the decision stems from creative difficulties. Production entities including 20th Television, The Muppets Studio, and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures have reportedly struggled to “crack a premise” that works for all involved parties for an ongoing series format.
