Disney comics celebrate 75 years in Germany

The German comic book market celebrates 75 years of Walt Disney characters, following the 1951 debut of Mickey Mouse magazines in the country. The milestone highlights the enduring legacy of characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Scrooge McDuck.

Since 1967, the “Funny Paperbacks” format has seen over 600 editions released in Germany. These books allowed for longer, more complex stories compared to the standard magazine format. While many early German-market comics were produced in Italy, they maintained a consistent brand identity that allowed readers to immerse themselves in the world of Duckburg.

Individual collectors also mark the anniversary. Ernst Heimes, an 81-year-old from Rottenburg, has maintained a collection of rare monthly issues dating back to his childhood. He recalls that the comics, which once cost 75 Pfennig, were often criticized as “trash literature” in post-war Germany, despite their massive popularity among younger generations.
