National Treasure 3 confirmed in development at Disney
Director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed that 'National Treasure 3' is officially in development at Disney. During a live recording of the 'National Treasure Hunt' podcast in Philadelphia, Turteltaub announced that the project has moved past the conceptual stage because the team finally has a screenplay that he and the producers like, which has also received approval from Disney.
While the news is a major development for the franchise, Turteltaub noted that the project is still in 'Hollywood real' territory, meaning production is subject to change. He specifically indicated that the return of Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates is a central requirement for the film to proceed.
Turteltaub also suggested that the long delay in producing a third installment was partly due to a polarized American political climate, noting that the new script may need to address modern political divisions and themes of patriotism to remain relevant.
