Disney+ disables Chromecast in Netherlands and Germany due to patent ruling

Disney+ users in the Netherlands and Germany are currently unable to use Chromecast functionality due to a recent patent ruling. On September 2, the Düsseldorf division of the Unified Patent Court issued a ban regarding a patent held by InterDigital. This specific patent concerns the technology used to seamlessly transition video playback between different devices, such as casting from a smartphone to a television.

Unlike previous disputes involving video compression codecs like HEVC and VP9, this ruling targets the functional method by which the app discovers nearby devices and establishes a connection via Wi-Fi. While the option to cast remains visible in the app, users receive a notification stating that Chromecast streaming is unavailable in their country.

This restriction is limited to the Netherlands and Germany because the patent in question is only active in those specific jurisdictions. Users seeking alternatives can still utilize AirPlay to stream content to compatible devices, as this technology remains unaffected by the current legal dispute.
