Disney+ Mulls Free Ad‑Supported Tier to Counter YouTube

Disney is evaluating a free, ad‑supported version of its Disney+ streaming service. The idea was raised by product and technology chief Adam Smith at an internal meeting, though no launch timetable or content details have been disclosed.

The move is aimed at recapturing viewers drifting to free platforms such as YouTube, Tubi and Roku Channel. Nielsen data show that free, ad‑supported streaming captured 18.7 % of U.S. TV viewing time in April 2026, up from 16.8 % a year earlier and 12.7 % in 2024.

Disney+ already offers a lower‑cost ad‑supported bundle with Hulu at $12.99 per month, but a dedicated free tier would represent a broader shift toward hybrid models in the streaming industry.
