Disney eyed James Bond franchise before Amazon took control
Bob Iger told the Financial Times that during his early years as Disney CEO the studio compiled a list of major acquisition targets that included Marvel, Star Wars and the James Bond franchise. Disney went on to purchase Marvel in 2009 and Lucasfilm, the holder of Star Wars, in 2012, but did not acquire the Bond properties, which remained with the Broccoli family. In 2025 the franchise’s creative control was transferred to Amazon, ending Disney’s pursuit. The revelation has sparked discussion among fans about how Disney might have managed the iconic spy series.
The interview highlighted Disney’s broader strategy of expanding its portfolio of high‑profile entertainment properties, a pattern that continued with later acquisitions such as Pixar and the launch of Disney+. The contrast between Disney’s successful deals and the missed Bond acquisition provides insight into the company’s decision‑making process.
