Disney+ faces consumer backlash over removal of 4K and HDR features

Consumer advocacy groups, including Altroconsumo and Euroconsumers, have launched a petition and formal warning against Disney+ following the removal of premium technical features. The organizations allege that the service eliminated 4K resolution, HDR support, and casting capabilities like Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Cast for Premium subscribers without reducing monthly fees or providing adequate notice.

The technical issues reportedly stemmed from a legal dispute involving InterDigital regarding the HEVC codec. While Disney+ transitioned to the royalty-free VP9 codec in August to restore 4K resolution for millions of European users, HDR support has not been reinstated.

The advocates are demanding an automatic refund of at least 5 euros per month for affected Premium subscribers and are threatening to escalate the matter to European authorities if the compensation is not provided.
