Disney+ sets October 21 release for live-action Moana

Disney has announced that the live-action remake of Moana will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ on October 21, 2026. The film, directed by Thomas Kail, features Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and sees Dwayne Johnson returning to his role as the demigod Maui.

The production follows the core narrative of the 2016 animated original, depicting Moana’s journey beyond the reef of Motunui to restore the heart of Te Fiti. The musical score includes classic tracks such as ‘How Far I’ll Go’ and ‘I Am Moana,’ alongside the new song ‘Along The Way.’

While the film received mixed critical reviews—notably a 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes—it has maintained strong audience interest, reflected in an 88% Popcornmeter rating. Disney noted that the theatrical run, which debuted on July 10, 2026, underperformed at the box office, partly due to its proximity to the release of Moana 2. To celebrate the release, Disney is partnering with the nonprofit Heal the Bay for a community beach cleanup at Santa Monica Beach on October 17, 2026.
