Disney to discontinue Play Disney Parks app in September

Disney has announced it will discontinue the Play Disney Parks app on September 16. The app, which launched in June 2018, was designed to enhance guest interaction at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World by turning attraction queues into interactive gaming experiences.

Key features included games such as ‘Playset Party’ at Toy Story Mania!, ‘Rocket Race’ at Space Mountain, and the ‘Star Wars: Datapad’ in Galaxy’s Edge, which allowed guests to scan and hack elements within the land. Other experiences included the ‘DuckTales World Showcase Adventure’ at EPCOT and various quests across Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

As of now, Disney has not provided a specific reason for the shutdown or announced a replacement application. Observers note that Disney has been increasingly shifting interactive elements toward MagicBand+ technology.
