Disney+ Announces Julie Andrews Documentary for 2027 Release

Disney+ confirmed that a new documentary about actress and singer Julie Andrews will debut on the streaming service in 2027. The film is being directed and produced by documentary filmmaker RJ Cutler, whose past work includes “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry.” It will combine previously unseen archival material with fresh interviews, tracing Andrews’s rise from British vaudeville to iconic roles in *Mary Poppins*, *The Sound of Music* and *The Princess Diaries* while also addressing the personal challenges she has faced.

The announcement was accompanied by a glowing portrait of Andrews posted on Disney’s X account, which prompted an unexpected wave of fan backlash. Users reacted with statements such as “I almost threw up” and “I stopped breathing,” fearing the image hinted at her death. Disney later clarified the post was solely to promote the upcoming documentary. Cutler said, “Julie Andrews is not simply a beloved performer, she is a cultural touchstone… we delve into the extraordinary challenges she overcame throughout her life.”
