Disney World Endures Lightning Strike, Extreme Heat and Saharan Dust

On July 5, 2026 a lightning bolt struck a building just outside the Storybook Circus area at Magic Kingdom Park. Guests captured the flash and a loud crack on video. The park’s lightning‑rod system functioned as designed, preventing injuries and damage. The storm forced temporary closure of outdoor attractions across all four Walt Disney World parks and caused brief power outages, but operations returned to normal once the weather cleared.

At the same time, central Florida was under a multi‑day heatwave with "feels‑like" temperatures reaching 108‑112 °F. The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for the Orlando area, warning of heat exhaustion and heat stroke risks for visitors. Compounding the heat, a Saharan dust plume moved over the region, suppressing the usual afternoon thunderstorms that normally provide relief. The dust also introduced fine particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10) that can irritate the lungs. Together, the extreme heat and dust created heightened health hazards for guests at Disney World.
