Walt Disney World Resort has officially moved forward with plans to reimagine the iconic Spaceship Earth attraction at EPCOT. On August 27, Walt Disney Imagineering filed a construction permit to begin the project, following an announcement made at the D23 Expo 2026.

The overhaul aims to maintain the ride’s core theme of celebrating human innovation while shifting the focus toward human connection. This marks Disney’s second attempt at such a project; an earlier plan initiated in 2019 was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the specific timeline for closure and the duration of construction have not been disclosed, the project follows Disney’s recent efforts to transform Future World into the neighborhoods of World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature. Details regarding potential changes to the audio-animatronics or the return of longtime narrator Judi Dench remain unconfirmed.

In a separate development, a video recently surfaced online showing an animatronic within the current attraction malfunctioning, with its head slumped against its shoulder during a ride-through.
