Disney‑Pixar’s Toy Story 5 opens July 3 in Japan after record‑breaking US debut

The fifth instalment of Disney‑Pixar’s Toy Story series is set for a nationwide theatrical release in Japan on July 3, 2026. In the United States the film opened earlier, earning roughly $160 million in its first three‑day weekend and surpassing ¥52.9 billion (about $32.9 million) worldwide, making it the strongest opening in the franchise’s history.

Ahead of the Japanese launch, a promotional event was held on June 24 at Shibuya 109’s store‑front space. Singer‑songwriter Diamond☆Yukai performed the series anthem “You've Got a Friend in Me,” while actress Atsuko Maeda and her child shared personal memories of the films and discussed the new storyline, which introduces a digital tablet called Lily Pad that challenges the toys’ role in children’s play.

Toy Story 5 continues the series’ themes of friendship and the impact of technology on childhood, featuring returning voices for Woody, Buzz and new characters such as Lily Pad. The film will be distributed in Japan by Walt Disney Japan.
