Disney's Animal Kingdom welcomes new silverback gorilla Bakari

Disney's Animal Kingdom has introduced Bakari, a 21‑year‑old western lowland gorilla, as the new silverback leader of the park’s Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail troop. Bakari arrived from the Saint Louis Zoo, succeeding Gino, who had led the group for nearly three decades.

Animal care staff, led by manager Rachel, are guiding a gradual integration process that begins with visual introductions behind a protected barrier and progresses to closer physical interactions. The effort supports the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan, aiming to maintain a healthy, diverse gorilla population and inspire conservation awareness.

Bakari is described as calm and easy‑going, already showing typical gorilla behavior such as lounging with his chin on his hand while observing his surroundings.
