Disney President weighs Jimmy Kimmel’s future amid late-night economic shifts

The future of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ remains uncertain as Disney evaluates the shifting economics of late-night television. During the Bloomberg Screentime conference, Disney President and Chief Creative Officer Dana Walden declined to confirm whether Kimmel will return to ABC after his current contract expires in May 2027.

Walden noted that while Kimmel is performing a ‘phenomenal job’ and his ratings have increased, those gains are relative to a shrinking overall broadcast audience. She highlighted a significant disconnect between digital popularity and profitability, stating that while Kimmel’s monologues garner millions of views on YouTube, such digital engagement is ‘not a lucrative opportunity’ compared to traditional broadcast advertising.

Amidst these economic discussions, Howard Stern recently defended Kimmel on-air, warning ABC executives that they would ‘have hell to pay’ if they tampered with the host’s show. While ABC has previously dismissed reports of Kimmel’s potential cancellation as speculative, Walden emphasized that the company is working to ‘make sense of the business while also honoring a deep partnership’ with the host.
