Disney's live-action 'Vaiana' opens in Dutch and German cinemas

Disney's live‑action adaptation of its animated classic "Vaiana" (known as "Moana" in some markets) began theatrical runs in the Netherlands on 8 July 2026 and in Germany on 9 July 2026. The film stars Catherine Laga’aia as the titular heroine and Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui, and is directed by Thomas Kail, with production credits including Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin‑Manuel Miranda.

In a recent interview, Laga’aia and director Kail described the shoot as emotionally intense, highlighting water stunts, on‑set music performances and the involvement of veteran actress Rena Owen. Kail emphasized the goal of grounding the story in family dynamics, while Laga’aia noted the impact of singing "I am Vaiana" on set. The release is being shown in multiple formats such as 3D, IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 4D across both countries.
