Disney’s Moana live-action film arrives in Italian cinemas

The Disney live-action adaptation of ‘Moana’ (Oceania) is released in Italian cinemas on August 19, 2026. Directed by Thomas Kail, the film reimagines the 2016 animated story set in ancient Polynesia.

Catherine Laga’aia makes her film debut as Moana, the daughter of a chief who ventures across the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui, a character he previously voiced in the original animation.

While the film features stunning visual effects and breathtaking scenery, some critics have questioned the necessity of the remake so soon after the original success. In the United States, the film saw a relatively weak debut, earning approximately $43 million during its opening weekend.
