Disney's Star Wars film 'Mandalorian and Grogu' records weak box‑office and threatens franchise outlook

Disney’s latest Star Wars installment, focused on the characters Mandalorian and Grogu, posted a stark box‑office shortfall. In the United States it earned about $155 million, and worldwide revenue has topped roughly $290 million, far below the $500‑$600 million Disney estimates needed to break even.

The film’s production budget was around $165 million, considerably lower than previous entries such as $590 million for *The Last Jedi* and $640 million for *The Rise of Skywalker*. Despite briefly out‑grossing Ridley Scott’s 2012 sci‑fi film *Prometheus* in the U.S. market, the new release remains the lowest‑grossing Star Wars title in franchise history and could force Disney to absorb losses exceeding $100 million, influencing future investment decisions for the series.

Mixed critical reception – a 62 % Rotten Tomatoes score versus *Prometheus*'s 73 % – and a rapid drop in attendance after the opening weekend underscore the challenges the franchise now faces in retaining both longtime fans and newer audiences.
