Anne Hathaway Says Princess Diaries 3 Script Reset Amid Pregnancy

Actress Anne Hathaway confirmed that the long‑awaited third instalment of Disney’s Princess Diaries franchise is still in development, but the project has experienced a major rewrite. In a July 2026 interview on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, Hathaway said the original screenplay was discarded after the creative team discovered a “story breakthrough.” The new direction required the writers to start the script from scratch, which she acknowledged “is not the update anyone wants,” but added that the team feels confident about the new story.

Hathaway also revealed she is pregnant with her third child, noting, “I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make Princess Diaries 3.” The pregnancy contributes to uncertainty about a filming start date, and no official release date has been set.

Disney announced the sequel in 2024, attaching director Adele Lim and writer Flora Greeson, with producers Debra Martin Chase, Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack. The first two films together earned roughly $300 million worldwide. While Hathaway continues to promote several other films in 2026, fans can expect the sequel to return to the fictional kingdom of Genovia once the script is finalized and filming can commence.
