Disposable food packaging releases higher microplastic levels than reusable containers
A study conducted by researchers from Seoul National University, the Korea Consumer Agency, and The Catholic University of Korea has found that disposable food packaging releases significantly more microplastics into food than reusable containers.
Testing involved sixteen types of packaging used by South Korean restaurants for delivery and takeout, including soup containers, meal boxes, sauce containers, and cups. Researchers used distilled water at temperatures of 100 degrees Celsius for hot foods and 20 degrees Celsius for cold items. The highest concentration of microplastics was found in single-use polypropylene soup containers, which released an average of 29.7 particles per dose.
In contrast, reusable containers typically released between one and two particles. The study also noted that paper cups are not necessarily plastic-free, as they often feature thin polyethylene linings to prevent leaking, which can release particles into liquids. Researchers suggest that metal containers may be the safest long-term option for reducing microplastic exposure, though this would require robust return and recycling systems.
