Distance learning and lifelong education see rise in older students

Distance learning (EaD) has driven a significant increase in higher education enrollment among older populations. In Brazil, data from the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) shows that enrollment for individuals aged 50 and older grew by approximately 260% over the last decade, rising from 59,000 in 2015 to 211,000 in 2025. The growth is even more pronounced for those over 60, with a nearly 390% increase in enrollments.

This expansion is largely attributed to the private education sector and the flexibility of distance learning, which allows students to balance studies with work and personal life. The shift toward hybrid and remote models gained momentum following the 2020 lockdowns.

In Portugal, the University of Lisbon reported record participation in its M50 program, which is specifically designed for individuals over 50. The current edition reached 241 enrollees, focusing on themes such as sustainability, technology, and citizenship to encourage lifelong learning and active aging.
