Distrito Federal proposal seeks to increase Public Defender funding

The Pelo 21/2026 proposal is approaching a second vote in the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District (CLDF). The measure suggests that at least 1% of the Federal District's Net Current Revenue be allocated to the Public Defender's Office, with a gradual increase up to 2%.

Fernanda Fernandes, president of the National Association of Public Defenders (Anadep), has expressed support for the proposal, stating it is vital for expanding access to justice and protecting vulnerable populations. Public Defender General Reinaldo Rossano noted that strengthening the institution's capacity to handle cases involving health, housing, and domestic violence depends on this financial autonomy.

The proposal aims to provide more resources for personnel, technology, and presence in high-need areas, ensuring legal assistance for groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and victims of political or gender-based violence.
