Distrito Federal residents face rising costs for food and electricity

Residents of the Distrito Federal are facing significant financial pressure due to rising costs for essential goods and services. Inflationary data for 2026 shows sharp increases in basic food items, including onions at 45.16%, pinto beans at 44.30%, and long-life milk at 20.45%.

Low-income families are disproportionately affected, with food and rent consuming a much larger share of their monthly budgets compared to higher-income households. In addition to food costs, electricity bills have seen a notable surge. Neoenergia reported an average consumption increase of 14% in the capital, attributing the rise to high temperatures and the increased use of air conditioning and cooling devices.

While some residents have reported drastic increases in their utility bills without changing consumption habits, Neoenergia maintains that heatwaves and prolonged use of climate control appliances are the primary drivers of the higher costs.
