Distrito Federal special education faces funding and resource shortages

Special inclusive education in the Distrito Federal (DF) is facing significant challenges due to a lack of investment, resulting in a gap between existing legislation and the reality in public schools. Reports indicate a shortage of schools, specialized professionals, and pedagogical materials.

In one of the 13 special education centers in the DF, a teacher reported difficulties managing a mixed classroom of young students with diverse needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), physical disabilities, visual impairments, and Down Syndrome. Despite the small number of students, the lack of individualized support and adequate space led to overcrowding in practical terms.

The absence of sufficient professional support has resulted in students experiencing distress and behavioral issues. This environment has also impacted staff safety, with reports of teachers facing physical aggression due to the lack of necessary classroom assistance.
