Distrito Federal's Cartão Gás program assists 70,000 low‑income families

The Cartão Gás scheme in Brazil's Distrito Federal grants a R$ 100 credit every two months for the purchase of a 13‑kg LPG cylinder. Approximately 70,000 families currently receive the benefit, which is allocated automatically based on information in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico). Eligible households must reside in the Federal District, be registered in CadÚnico, have a monthly per‑person income of up to half the minimum wage, and declare that part of their income is spent on LPG. The family head must be at least 16 years old and have a CPF on record. Persons living on the streets and families in collective institutions are excluded.

When the number of eligible families exceeds available resources, priority is given first to single‑parent women with children up to six years old, then to families with children in that age range, followed by households with disabled members and finally elderly families. Beneficiaries can check their status through the Socio‑Economic Registration System and must collect the card at a designated bank agency within 120 days of issuance. The credit remains available as long as the eligibility criteria continue to be met.
