Disy leader Annita Demetriou reacts to Averof Neophytou’s Cyprus remarks

Disy leader Annita Demetriou is reportedly “furious” following remarks by her predecessor, Averof Neophytou, regarding the party’s role in the Cyprus problem. Neophytou accused the pro-settlement parties, Disy and Akel, of sidelining the issue to avoid political costs.

Neophytou specifically criticized Disy for “burying” the Ghali set of ideas and held the party chief of responsibility for the collapse of the Crans Montana talks. While senior Disy officials considered a rebuttal, the leadership decided against an immediate public confrontation to avoid internal divisions and a forced scrutiny of the party’s historical record.

Some party members have expressed concern that Neophytou’s intervention is “self-destructive,” raising questions about his potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential election.
