DISY President criticizes Cyprus government budget
Anita Demetriou, President of the DISY party, has criticized the Cypriot government's fourth budget, stating it lacks a developmental and reformist vision. During a press conference, she argued that the budget is merely managing existing problems rather than providing a cohesive plan for the future.
Demetriou highlighted that while previous economic concerns focused on unemployment and public debt, the current dominant issues are inflation and the high cost of living. She noted that while inflation was triggered by external factors, the government failed to properly assess the conditions or adapt its policies to mitigate the consequences.
The DISY leader identified a unique combination of challenges, including rising costs for essential goods, energy, housing, and high interest rates. She warned that persistent inflation could become a structural phenomenon in the coming years. Furthermore, she criticized the government for increasing non-essential spending and implementing untargeted measures that, in her view, benefit higher earners more than those with lower incomes.
