Dita Protopopová appointed head of Czech Ministry of Health's new mental health and addictions section
Psychiatrist Dita Protopopová was selected in an open competition to become senior director of the newly created Section for Mental Health and Addictions within the Czech Ministry of Health. The appointment, made by Health Minister Adam Vojtěch, takes effect on 1 August 2026.
The section, established on 1 July 2023, consolidates responsibilities previously handled by the Government Office of the Czech Republic. It combines the mental‑health department, the addiction‑policy department and the inspectorate for controlled substances. Its mandate is to develop care systems, continue psychiatric reform, coordinate ministry agendas and strengthen cooperation across health, social services and other stakeholders.
The national plan approved by the government earmarks 10.3 billion CZK for mental‑health care over the next four years, including roughly 3 billion CZK for investments and about 6 billion CZK annually from health‑insurance funds. Funding for addiction services exceeds 400 million CZK each year. Vojtěch praised Protopopová, stating, “I am glad she accepted responsibility for leading this area, which deserves strong expert leadership and close cooperation across the health and social system.”
