Divadlo Aréna debate over Douglas Murray book sparks controversy

A planned discussion at Bratislava’s Divadlo Aréna regarding the Slovak release of Douglas Murray’s book, ‘The War on Democracy: Israel, Hamas, and the Future of the West’, has sparked controversy within the Slovak cultural scene.

The platform ‘Otvorená Kultúra!’ has issued a statement criticizing the event, arguing that a public discussion of Murray’s views lacks necessary critical opposition. The platform describes Murray as an author who spreads Islamophobic views and holds discriminatory stances toward sexual minorities. They specifically noted the absence of a Palestinian perspective among the scheduled speakers, which includes political scientist Samuel Abrahám and political analyst Grigorij Mesežnikov.

Critics of the backlash argue that there is a growing trend of attempting to regulate cultural spaces by deciding which authors or speakers are acceptable before a discussion even takes place. They distinguish between criticizing an argument and attempting to prevent the argument from being voiced entirely.
