Divina Pastora serves as a major religious symbol in Barquisimeto

The Divina Pastora has become a central religious and cultural symbol in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. The tradition dates back to the 18th century when an image intended to represent the Immaculate Conception was delivered by mistake. Local accounts suggest the image became impossible to move from its location, which residents interpreted as a divine sign to remain in the city.

The devotion grew significantly in 1856 during a cholera epidemic, when residents sought protection through the image. Today, the annual procession held on January 14 draws hundreds of thousands of faithful, making it one of the largest religious manifestations in the country and a key element of the identity of the Lara region.
