Divorce filings rise in Canarias and Extremadura
Data from the second quarter of 2026 shows an increase in matrimonial dissolution filings across several Spanish regions. In Canarias, judicial bodies received 1,307 filings for divorce, separation, or annulment between April and June, marking a 13.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Canarias currently holds the highest rate of such filings per inhabitant in Spain, surpassing Cantabria and the Valencian Community.
Within Canarias, consensual divorces rose by 15.5% to 825 cases, while non-consensual divorces increased by 12.1% to 445 cases. Additionally, requests to modify existing measures, such as child custody and alimony, saw a 25.9% increase.
In Extremadura, 447 filings were recorded during the same period, a 4.7% increase from the previous year. While consensual divorces grew slightly by 2.9%, non-consensual divorces saw a significant rise of 15.4%. Approximately one in three filings in Extremadura occurred without prior agreement between spouses. Despite these increases, Extremadura's rate of 42.4 filings per 100,000 inhabitants remains slightly below the Spanish national average of 43.6.
