Dix Park demolition clears way for new Raleigh green space
Demolition of four former North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services hospital buildings at Raleigh’s Dix Park has concluded, clearing the way for new green space. The site is currently an active construction zone, with crews expected to begin seeding grass soon. The new grounds are projected to open to the public by late fall or early winter.
The project is part of a long-term redevelopment plan for the 308-acre property, which the city acquired from the state in 2015. While several structures were removed, municipal leaders intend to preserve select historical architecture for adaptive reuse, such as the Royster building.
Recent additions to the park include the Flower Cottage, which offers coffee and cocktails, and the Gibson Play Plaza. Future developments under the 10-year implementation plan may include a water garden and a theater area for cultural events.
