Dixcove Kundum Grand Durbars cancelled over security concerns
The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has cancelled the 2026 Kundum Grand Durbars scheduled for Lower and Upper Dixcove in Ghana’s Western Region. The decision, announced by the Western Regional Coordinating Council, was made following a meeting on August 17, 2026, to address public safety and security concerns.
Authorities stated that the cancellation is a preventive measure because they could not reach an agreement to ensure the peaceful conduct of both durbars simultaneously. The Council noted that the current circumstances created a potential for confrontation, property destruction, or a breakdown of public order. Officials urged all stakeholders and residents to refrain from organizing or participating in activities intended to climax the celebrations.
Nana Kwesi Agyemang, the Lower Dixcove Omanhene, expressed shock at the decision, noting that he had not been personally informed and had already invested substantial resources into the preparations. The two Dixcove paramountcies had recently attempted to resolve a legal dispute by agreeing to hold a joint Grand Durbar on August 26, 2026.
