DIY birdhouse construction for nature conservation

As winter approaches and nesting seasons draw near, constructing birdhouses is a practical way to support local bird populations. To ensure safety and utility, it is recommended to use natural, untreated materials such as spruce, pine, or larch boards, avoiding plastics, chipboard, or chemically treated wood.

Key construction tips include leaving the interior walls rough so fledglings can grip them with their claws, and ensuring the entrance hole is placed high enough to protect nests from predators. The size of the entrance hole is critical for attracting specific species; for example, a 28 mm diameter is suitable for the blue tit, while 32 mm is better for the great tit.

For winter protection, birdhouses should provide shelter from wind and snow. For nesting, it is advised to install houses before the main season begins to allow birds to acclimate, and to avoid moving or opening them once nesting has commenced.
