DIY mosquito repellents like burnt coffee and essential‑oil blends become popular in the US

Home‑made methods for keeping mosquitoes away are gaining attention. One technique involves slowly burning dry coffee grounds to produce a non‑toxic smoke that can mask the carbon‑dioxide cues mosquitoes use to locate people. Health experts note that while the smoke may deter insects, it does not replace proven protection such as screened windows, approved topical repellents or insecticide‑treated nets.

Another DIY route uses essential‑oil blends. Recipes featuring citronella, lemongrass, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus and rosemary are promoted online. Scientific studies show that lemon eucalyptus (PMD) offers protection comparable to DEET and can last up to six hours, whereas citronella‑based blends typically work for 20 minutes to two hours. Users are advised to apply the mixtures evenly and reapply frequently for continued efficacy.
