Diyanet denies allegations of luxury Tokyo trip by President Arpaguş
The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has issued a formal denial regarding allegations that its President, Safi Arpaguş, conducted a luxury trip to Tokyo. The controversy arose following reports in the BirGün newspaper, which claimed that Arpaguş traveled with a nine-person delegation, stayed in five-star hotels with nightly rates exceeding 20,000 TL, and utilized luxury vehicles.
Diyanet clarified that the visit was an official mission to attend the 10th General Assembly Meeting of the Tokyo Mosque Diyanet Foundation. The Presidency stated that the trip involved scheduled meetings, including addressing the congregation at the Tokyo Mosque, meeting with the Japanese Muslim Association, and conducting diplomatic contacts at the Turkish Embassy in Tokyo regarding religious and cultural relations.
The Presidency dismissed the characterization of the trip as a 'luxury tour,' arguing that such descriptions aim to create a misleading public perception that official or foundation resources were used for personal comfort. They noted that mentioning hotel star ratings or online room prices does not reflect the actual costs or the official nature of the institutional arrangements.
