Diyar Gündüz escapes from Essen medical clinic during armed raid

Diyar Gündüz, a prisoner sentenced to a total of 17 years for organized drug trafficking and violent crimes, escaped from a medical facility in Essen, Germany, on October 14. The escape occurred while Gündüz was being transported to a radiology clinic for an MRI scan.

Two masked and armed individuals intercepted Gündüz and two prison guards near Kennedyplatz. The attackers neutralized the guards by tying them to railings, though authorities confirmed that no service weapons were stolen during the incident. After releasing Gündüz from his shackles, the prisoner and his accomplices fled the scene using electric scooters.

Investigators are currently looking into how the attackers obtained the specific timing of the medical appointment, which Gündüz had reportedly learned only the previous evening. A wooden replica of a hand grenade was also discovered near the scene. Gündüz, who is linked to international drug trafficking networks, remains at large as police and prosecutors conduct a large-scale search.
