Diyarbakır: 3-year-old child tests positive for rabies

A 3-year-old child in the Sur district of Diyarbakır has tested positive for rabies, according to the Diyarbakır Governor's Office. The child, identified as N. K., reportedly came into contact with a cat approximately four months ago.

Following a period of sudden illness beginning on August 10, 2026, the child was hospitalized and subsequently intubated as their condition deteriorated. Laboratory tests conducted by a reference facility confirmed the rabies diagnosis on August 13, 2026.

In response, health authorities from the Provincial and Sur District Directorates of Health have launched contact tracing and filyasyon efforts. Individuals identified as having been in contact with the child are receiving rabies prophylaxis. Additionally, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and local municipalities have initiated field studies and measures regarding stray animals in the region.
