Diyarbakır Fire Department implements chimney cleaning to prevent fires

The Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department is conducting chimney cleaning services across the city center and 17 districts to mitigate fire risks. These operations target the removal of accumulated grease and soot in chimneys, which can ignite due to high temperatures and spread to roofs or surrounding structures.

To manage these risks, the department has implemented a digital chimney tracking system. According to Cengiz Özdağ, the Fire Department Training Branch Manager, this system monitors cleaning schedules based on risk levels: restaurants and eateries are tracked for cleaning every three months, bakeries every six months, and residential buildings once a year. Özdağ noted that the use of this technology has led to a statistically significant decrease in the number of fires.

In addition to local cleaning efforts, fire authorities are issuing general safety warnings. Citizens are advised to avoid discarding cigarette butts in forests or near flammable materials, ensure all coals are fully extinguished, and maintain electrical safety by avoiding overloaded power strips. Authorities also emphasize the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and having functional fire extinguishers in homes and workplaces.
