Diyarbakır Health Department Holds Seminar on Adolescent Brain Development
The Ministry of Health’s Public Health General Directorate continues the "Sağlıklı Hayat Saatleri" program, aimed at improving health literacy and preventive health. As part of the program, a seminar titled "Ergenlerde Beyin Gelişimi ve Fırsatlar" was held in Diyarbakır at the Dr. Abdullah Biroğul Conference Hall.
Dr. Yağmur Soysal, associate professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Dicle University Faculty of Medicine, presented. She explained that adolescence is the second critical period for brain change after early childhood, characterized by synaptic pruning, myelination and re‑organization of brain networks, which together create a high capacity for learning. Soysal urged that the period be seen as a development opportunity, highlighting accelerated social learning, peer influence, and the role of activities such as language, music, sport, coding and art.
She recommended supporting adolescents through safe adult relationships, positive peer environments, responsibility, autonomy, involvement in decision‑making, adequate sleep, exercise and emotional coaching. Risk‑taking should be channelled into safe areas, and technology use should be balanced rather than outright prohibited.
