DJ Lagway seeks fresh start at Baylor after difficult tenure at Florida
Former Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway is seeking a fresh start at Baylor following a difficult tenure at the University of Florida under head coach Billy Napier. During his time in Gainesville, Lagway faced significant challenges, including a lingering shoulder injury and a struggling program that saw Napier fired midway through the 2025 season.
The emotional toll of the program's decline was highlighted by an interaction between Lagway and his mother, Nikita. Following a loss to LSU in September 2025, Lagway reportedly told his mother, ‘Momma, I think God forgot about me,’ reflecting the pressure of being viewed as a savior for the historic SEC program.
Napier's tenure at Florida was marked by inconsistent performance, failing to achieve more than eight wins in three seasons. Following his dismissal, the Gators hired Jon Sumrall to lead the program. Lagway has since moved to Baylor for his junior season.
