Djamila Rowe describes traumatic youth in GDR detention center

Djamila Rowe has shared harrowing accounts of her youth in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), specifically regarding her time in the Crimmitschau youth detention center (Jugendwerkhof). In a reportage, she described being held in an isolation cell consisting only of concrete walls with no bed or seating, stating that even her dogs did not live in such conditions.

Rowe explained that she was sent to the facility after her mother fled the GDR, an act classified as being ‘republic-fleeing’ (republikflüchtig), a detail she noted was recorded in her Stasi files. She spent 18 months at the Crimmitschau facility and reported being the first youth to be confined in the specific isolation cell she described. Prior to this, she experienced physical and psychological violence in various children's homes and was subjected to three-shift labor systems.
