Djerba convicts perform beach cleaning as alternative sentencing

In Djerba, Tunisia, individuals serving alternative sentences have participated in a beach cleaning initiative to collect plastic waste and debris. The operation, which took place near the Sidi Zaïed mosque and the coastline connecting to Borj Ghazi Mustapha fort in Houmt Souk, aims to protect the marine environment and reduce plastic pollution.

These community service mandates are managed by the Médenine Support Bureau under the supervision of a judge of the application of penalties. The program is designed to promote social reintegration and personal responsibility by allowing those convicted of minor offenses to contribute to the community instead of facing traditional incarceration.

According to Mohamed Bakhouch of the Médenine Support Bureau, the initiative seeks to utilize the skills of the convicted while meeting the needs of public institutions. The use of alternative penalties is limited to specific, less serious infractions and is intended to alleviate pressure on the national prison system.
