Djibouti hosts IGAD extraordinary session on regional security
Djibouti hosted the 74th extraordinary session of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Council of Ministers from September 14 to 15, 2026. During the summit, President Ismail Omar Guelleh met with regional foreign ministers to review the organization’s administrative and financial status, as well as emerging geopolitical challenges.
Key discussions focused on regional peace and security, with member states reaffirming a commitment to using dialogue to resolve political disputes. The session also addressed the impact of the crisis in the Red Sea and the strategic Bab el-Mandeb strait. Djibouti assured regional partners that international navigation through these waters remains normal.
Additionally, the ministers addressed the need for increased financial contributions from member states to ensure IGAD’s independence and responsiveness. The session aimed to strengthen collective approaches toward stability and cooperation across the Horn of Africa.
